Rex & George

Even bunnies love bunnies...

George has been building a nest to have her babies

With George preggers, she has tried to build her nest under the dog cage.  In and Out, In and Out - digging - and sometimes Rex would help her.

We decided she needed to move indoors - and what better cage than one we already have... a glass cage for Kevin's dear departed snake, "Slinky".  I put Rex in with her while I mucked out the chicken run.  We did find it was too small for the nesting box however- so we upgraded to a cage I found on craigslist. The box inside the cage (right side) is actually a nesting box for a chicken, but it'll work just fine.

A small update on the rabbits.  George is not a nice girl!  She doesn't like to be held or petted.  I think she'll make a nice stew some day.  Rex on the other hand is a love!  He comes up and nibbles on you - tugs on your shoes or pants to get your attention.  He loves to be held - he just doesn't like to be put down.  I think he's afraid he will be dropped, so as he gets closer to the ground he starts to panic.  Does anyone know how to clip rabbit toe nails?

Chicken update

The Americunas are very social birds. They actually like to be held.  One jumped from the top of the outside rabbit cage to my shoulder today.  Of course that made the other one want to be up there too.  She was bobbing her head so I put my hand out and up she jumped also.  They have such beautiful colorings.  The Barred Rocks are just plain ugly!  They are starting to get new feathers - adult feathers I think - so they stick up here and there.  Peep, the Cuckoo Maran that I hatched definitely does not like to be held.  I can hardly believe how fast that tiny thing can run.  I wonder if he'll ever grow - he's still the runt.  As for the Mille Fluers one is sociable - we think it's a male - and the other two not so much.  But they don't run like Peep does.

We let them out of the chicken run twice now.  I wish they would get bigger so I could let them run around more often without worrying about them slipping through one of the fence boards and running into the neighbor's yard.  They did find their way to the garden and decimated the potato plants... both times they were out they went straight for them.  See some pictures below.

Truck

Picture

If you followed me on Facebook at all, there was a picture of Kevin trying to put wood into the back of my Saturn Vue - my comment was that it's hard to be a farm girl without a truck.  Now it's official - I'm a farm girl.  I traded in both my Smart car and my Saturn and got a 2007 Chevy Silverado LT - and to the left is a picture of it full of wood.  Free scrap wood actually. As you know from the last post, we are going to be building raised garden beds - that's what the wood is for.  It was so much easier in the truck than it ever could have been in a car.

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Kevin has tomorrow off work, so we'll be working on those raised beds.  I also had the great idea to put the 'stuff' from the compost pile into the chipper/shredder - it will break it down quite a bit so it can decompose faster... Kevin had to fix it after it died.  But there's more to go in and I can try again tomorrow.

Saturday we have a date to play at Don & Pat's house.  We'll bring the chipper/shredder with us and  help them to trim trees and I get to keep the shavings - there are so many places I can put them - I just don't know where to start.

For Sunday, the Independence of our glorious country we will be home rather than watching the fireworks.  Bo just isn't up to the noise and confusion.  We left him alone last year and came home to a very stinky mess all through the bedroom and a shaky dog who was whining.  He's an old man and I won't have him too many more years.  I will be by his side protecting him from the noise and confusion.
